The short version
Miyajima Tides is a static information site. We don't ask you to register, we don't run a newsletter, and we don't collect names, addresses or payment details. We use analytics to see which pages are useful, and one of the two services we use sets cookies. The only personal data that reaches us directly is what you choose to put in an email.
What happens automatically
Server logs
Our web host records standard access logs — IP address, browser and operating system, the page requested, and the time. These are used to keep the site running and secure, and are not used to identify individual visitors.
Analytics
We use a privacy-preserving, cookieless analytics service (Cloudflare Web Analytics). It records that a page was viewed, roughly where in the world the visit came from, and which site referred it. It sets no cookies, stores no identifiers on your device, and does not follow you across other websites.
We also use Google Analytics 4, which does set cookies on your device. It records which pages you visit, roughly where the visit came from, and when you follow one of our affiliate links — that last one is how we tell whether this site pays for itself. IP addresses are anonymised before they reach Google. We do not use it for advertising, and we do not sell or share this data.
You can opt out of Google Analytics on every site with Google's browser add-on, or by blocking cookies for this site — the tide data works exactly the same either way.
Advertising
We currently show no advertising on this site.
If that changes — most likely through Google AdSense — third-party vendors including Google may use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this and other websites. We will update this page and the date at the top of it before any such advertising appears, and add a consent notice where one is required.
You can opt out of personalised advertising at any time in Google's Ads Settings, or opt out of third-party vendors' use of cookies for personalised advertising at aboutads.info.
Affiliate links
Some outbound links to accommodation and activity providers are affiliate links. If you follow one, the destination site may set a cookie recording that you arrived from here, so that any resulting booking is attributed to us. We may earn a commission; you pay no more than you otherwise would. We do not receive your booking details, payment information or personal data from those providers — only aggregate reporting of whether a booking occurred.
Once you leave this site, the destination's own privacy policy applies. We have no control over how those companies handle your data.
If you email us, we keep the message and your address for as long as needed to deal with it. We don't add you to any list and we don't share it.
Information sent to third parties
When you open a page on this site, your browser also contacts the following third parties. This list is published so you can see exactly what leaves your device and why.

- Google Fonts (Google LLC) — your IP address and browser details, in order to serve the typefaces this site uses.
- Affiliate networks (A8.net, Agoda, Viator, GetYourGuide) — only if you click an affiliate link. The destination records that you arrived from this site so a booking can be attributed to us. Nothing is sent unless you click.
Nothing else is transmitted, and we do not sell or share any of it.
Cookies
This site sets analytics cookies through Google Analytics 4 (the _ga family), used to tell repeat visits from new ones. Our other analytics service, Cloudflare Web Analytics, sets none. We run no advertising cookies.
Following an affiliate link to a booking site takes you off this site, and that company's own cookies and privacy policy then apply. Everything here works normally with cookies blocked entirely — the tide times, the walkable windows and the calendar are all computed without them.
Your rights
Depending on where you live — including under the EU/UK GDPR and Japan's Act on the Protection of Personal Information — you may have the right to access, correct or delete personal data held about you, and to object to certain processing. Because we hold almost nothing, this usually amounts to email correspondence. Write to us and we'll act on it.
Children
This site is intended for a general audience and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children.
Changes
If this policy changes, the date at the top of this page changes with it.
