When can you walk under the Great Torii at Miyajima?

You can walk on the seabed to the Great Torii when the tide is below approximately 100 cm. This usually happens for a few hours around low tide, twice a day. The gate appears to float when the tide is above 250 cm.

How long does the walkable window last?

Typically 2 to 4 hours centred on low tide, depending on the day's tidal range. Spring tides (around new and full moon) give the longest windows.

The one thing day-trippers miss

Tonight's low tide is after the last ferry fills up.

Most visitors leave by 5 pm. But the torii is at its best at night high tide, lit up and fully afloat — and at dawn low tide, when you can walk the seabed almost alone. Both belong to people who sleep on the island.
